Yes — Krav Maga is widely regarded as the most effective reality-based self-defense system available. KMI NYC instructors have between 10 and 30 years of training and teaching experience, vetted at the highest levels in Israel and the US. How long does it take to learn Krav Maga?

With consistent training of 2-3 classes per week, students can develop meaningful self-defense capability within months and reach black belt level in approximately 40 months. KMI NYC's Foundation Program is a 12-month course designed to take students from beginner to high-level practitioner. After completing the Foundation Program, students are invited to continue in the Black Belt Program.

Is there a self-defense law in New York City?

Under New York law, the use of force is legally justified when you reasonably believe it is necessary to defend yourself or another person from imminent unlawful physical force. Deadly force is only justified when there is a reasonable belief of a threat to life, serious injury, kidnapping, robbery, or rape. KMI NYC's curriculum includes conflict communication and legal awareness as part of its complete self-defense system.

KMI NYC's induction class is specifically built for beginners — a semi-private introductory session that teaches core principles and class structure before joining regular classes. What is the difference between Krav Maga and other martial arts?

Traditional martial arts like karate, taekwondo, and BJJ are typically designed around sport competition or cultural tradition — with rules, weight classes, and controlled environments. How often should I train Krav Maga?

For meaningful skill development, KMI NYC recommends a minimum of 2 classes per week. Students training 3 or more times per week progress significantly faster and develop the muscle memory required for skills to be available under stress. Does KMI NYC offer classes for women?

Yes. KMI NYC offers dedicated women's self-defense classes every Wednesday at 6pm at the Tribeca location. These classes are reality-based self-protection training designed specifically for women, covering practical defense against the most common threats women face. Mixed adult classes are also open to women at both locations throughout the week.

Does KMI NYC offer kids martial arts classes?

Yes. Kids and teen self-defense classes are offered through Combat Club by KMI — NYC's only dedicated life skills and self-defense academy for children aged 5–14, located at 281 Broadway, Tribeca. The curriculum combines Krav Maga, Muay Thai, Boxing, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, developed with behavioral psychologists and child development researchers.
